What is an insect bite or sting?
An insect bite or sting occurs when an insect penetrates the skin with its mouthparts or delivers venom through a stinger. This can result in localized pain, redness, swelling, and itching at the site of the bite or sting. Most insect bites and stings are mild reactions and resolve on their own or with basic care.
Common symptoms
Symptoms of an insect bite or sting may include:
- Pain or discomfort at the bite or sting site
- Skin discolored in the affected area and localized swelling
- Itching or a burning sensation
- A small, raised bump or welt
- Mild bruising
